In March 2013, Pita Pit franchisees Mike Valchuk in Waterdown, Ont., and Tom Chlan in neighbouring Burlington partnered to hold Kicks 4 Kids, a month-long shoe drive in their respective restaurants. They encouraged residents of their communities to donate new pairs of running shoes in suitable sizes for children and teenagers in exchange for deeply discounted pita specials and a chance to win a new Chevrolet Equinox crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV).
To ‘kick off’ the drive, they persuaded professional football players from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to roll pitas in their stores and help draw customers’ attention to Kicks 4 Kids. And at the end of the drive, Valchuk and Chlan personally visited local schools to distribute the new shoes to kids in need.
Far from an isolated occasion, Kicks 4 Kids was just one of many ways Valchuk routinely gives back to his community. He also runs a ‘donate a skate’ program, sponsors a girls’ hockey team and a boys’ baseball team, raises funds for and makes personal donations to Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program—which also supports kids in sports by covering the costs of equipment, registration and/or transportation—and provides food for 75 to 100 volunteers at Waterdown’s annual Relay for Life run for cancer research.
