With more than 30 years of industry experience, Hickory Dickory Decks has emerged as one of Canada’s largest deck builders. We recently spoke to Tom Jacques, president, CEO, and founder of Hickory Dickory Decks to learn more about the company’s franchising program, its benefits, and future plans for the business.

Canadian Business Franchise (CBF): What are the benefits of becoming a Hickory Dickory Decks franchisee?

Tom Jacques (TJ): There are many benefits of becoming a Hickory Dickory Decks franchisee, including great income potential, the ability to work from home, and enjoying a healthy outdoor working environment. Further, we are a seasonal business, which means long winter breaks and more time
with family.

CBF: How does the company help franchisees succeed?

TJ: We have a proven marketing system that allows new franchisees to get leads from day one. Our website is our lead generator. With our joint advertising funds, we are able to contribute to search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns that allow us to rank high on Google. Further, every franchise has a franchise manager to assist franchisees. With a four-week training program and ongoing support, our franchise managers help in every area of the business.

CBF: What are some of the qualities you look for in a franchisee?

TJ: We are looking for franchisees who are financially responsible and accountable, driven, committed to upholding high professional standards, able to maintain our national brand, and offer exceptional customer service. No building experience is required. Most of our franchisees become salespeople and project managers and focus on growing the business.

CBF: What sets the company apart from industry competition?

TJ: We focus on low maintenance decking, which allows us to create beautiful outdoor living spaces that are built to last. Our research and development strategies help us stay ahead of competition. Lastly, we are almost sold out in Ontario, which allows us to have exit strategies in place for our local owners.

CBF: What are the future plans for the business?

TJ: We will continue to help our local owners succeed and enjoy what they do. We are focusing on Ontario currently. Our goal is to continue to expand throughout Canada and the United States in the near future.
