Burger restaurant franchisor A&W Food Services of Canada will eliminate all plastic straws from its locations across the country by the end of the year. It is reportedly the first North American quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain to make this commitment.
The franchises will instead offer paper straws that are 100 per cent biodegradable, compostable and sustainably sourced. They are built to last for two to three hours in a drink and to break down naturally in three to six months. The switch will keep 82 million plastic straws out of landfills and waterways each year.
“We are proud to make this change, which has been driven by the wishes of our franchisees, their staff and our customers,” says Susan Senecal, president and CEO of A&W Canada.
