White Spot celebrates 90 years with ‘retro’ menu and coins

In anticipation of its 90th birthday on June 16, Vancouver-based restaurant franchisor White Spot has introduced commemorative coins and a limited-edition retro menu that celebrates the burger joint’s roots in BBQ chicken.

Executive chef Danny Markowicz has brought back White Spot’s ‘chicken in the straw,’ combining a crispy quarter chicken with creamy coleslaw on a ‘nest’ of Kennebec fries, along with other anniversary items, available until June 15. Then, on June 16, customers at any of the system’s 65 restaurants across British Columbia and Alberta will receive one of 50,000 commemorative coins, while supplies last.

Reportedly Canada’s longest-running restaurant chain, White Spot originally served peanuts and hot dogs in 1928 out of a Model T Ford ‘travelling lunch counter’ at Vancouver’s Lookout Point, with the first restaurant and drive-in opening later the same year.
