The Grounds Guys was founded by Tim van Stralen in 1987 as Sunshine Grounds Care in Caledon, Ont. It soon became a successful family business with the involvement of his nine brothers and began franchising. In 2010, the Dwyer Group entered an agreement to market the franchise in the U.S. under a new name—The Grounds Guys—which was also adopted at the Canadian franchises. It became an award-winning franchise network with rapid growth across the U.S.
“This is an exciting time of growth for the Dwyer Group and a natural extension of our commitment to offer the premier grounds care services to customers across North America and around the world,” says Dwyer Group CEO Mike Bidwell.
The acquisition of the Canadian franchisor means 34 franchisees representing 40 locations across Canada join 194 U.S. franchises under the direction of Chris Elmore, president of The Grounds Guys.
“This is a tremendous achievement for our maturing network as we welcome our Canadian franchisees and look to the future from a dominant position,” says Elmore. “In return, our Canadian franchisees will greatly benefit from the collective family of service brands they now join across the Dwyer Group and the buying power, marketing expertise, training and support it brings.”
The Dwyer Group will maintain an office for The Grounds Guys in Canada and the van Stralen family will remain consultants for the brand and stakeholders in the company as equity investors. Peter van Stralen will also become a director of the Dwyer Group Canada.
