McDonald’s Canada is launching its first global currency in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its Big Mac sandwich.
Beginning Aug. 2, 50,000 MacCoins will be introduced across Canada, with each coin redeemable for one Big Mac at participating restaurants.
Available for a limited time, Canadians can get their hands on the coins via Twitter from Aug. 2 to Aug. 8 by sharing why they love the Big Mac and using the hashtag #BigMac50. Additional coins will also be available through giveaways from local radio stations. MacCoins will not be given out at restaurant locations in Canada.
More than 6.2 million coins will be distributed in over 50 countries around the world.
“As one of the most well-known and iconic McDonald’s menu items around the globe and in Canada, the Big Mac deserves the celebration the coin evokes,” said Jeff McLean, CFO of McDonald’s Canada.
