Medichair Home Medical Equipment’s franchise in Peterborough, Ont., has dedicated 150 square feet of store space to help support Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit Mennonite Central Committee Canada program designed to combine fair trade with healthy and environmentally responsible business practices.
Franchisees Allison and Ron Seiderer are opening the special section of their showroom from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., between November 18 and December 20, 2013. This ‘boutique’ space will feature hand-crafted Christmas ornaments and nativities, as well as fair trade foods and giftware from artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
“We were deeply touched by the stories from Ten Thousand Villages,” says Allison, “like Rajana, who makes peace dove necklaces from brass bombshell casings left after years of conflict in Cambodia; and the Laafi de Tenkodogo co-op that represents 50 women, mainly widows, making shea butter products. We just had to help and, hopefully, we’ll make a difference.”
