Pet Valu franchisees Dale and Joanne Orleck are once again providing support to sponsor dog guides in their local community. Last year, the Orlecks and their team members raised $18,000 to partner Cobourg, Ont. resident Kristen Connors with dog guide Ivor.

Pet Valu franchise partners Dale and Joanne Orleck are always looking for ways to give back to the community.

The Orlecks own three Pet Valu franchisees in Coburg, Port Hope, and Haliburton, Ont. Last year, when the staff at their three stores decided to raise funds to sponsor a dog guide for a community member, the Orlecks and their team set to work, raising $18,000.

“We have always done our best to support local animal recues and shelters, along with supporting other local charity and nonprofit organizations. When Pet Valu became the national sponsor of the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides and Dog Guides feeding program we became aware of how much a dog guide can enhance someone’s life,” the Orlecks told Canadian Business Franchise. “We also got to know another dog guide team (Christine and Ryder) who shopped at our Cobourg store.  The more we got to know them, the more we felt it was possible for our stores to sponsor one or two of our own dog guides.”

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the three Pet Valu stores, Cobourg resident Kristen Connors, and her canine vision dog guide Ivor have been partnered.  Before she was teamed with Ivor last fall, Connors, who is legally blind, was unable to leave her home unless she had someone to hold on to. Taking the stairs, at home and away from home, was extremely challenging.

Like all dog guides, Ivor was provided to Connors at no cost. Although she was sponsored independently by the Orlecks’ Pet Valu stores, many other teams are funded through the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides, which is taking place virtually this year on May 30, with a total goal of $1.3 million. Participants can complete their walk on May 30 or any time during the last two weeks of May.

“Fundraising is tougher this year because Ontario is still in lockdown and retail stores are closed to in-person shopping.  However, we have set a fundraising goal of $8,000 which we will be donating to local animal charities,” the Orlecks stated.
