Pharmacy franchisor Shoppers Drug Mart has launched its e-commerce platform for medical cannabis in Ontario.
Through its online portal, patients can access a range of products from Canadian licensed producers. The pharmacy will also offer support and counselling through its new Shoppers Cannabis Care Centre.
During the program’s initial launch, patients can bring their medical documentation (similar to a prescription) to a Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy. The request will then be processed and care team advisors will contact the patient to review their medical history, discuss any conflicts related to current medications, and provide support with online registration and strain selection.
Under current regulations, pharmacists cannot dispense medical cannabis from a pharmacy.
“As trusted medication experts, pharmacists have an important role to play in the safe and informed use of medical cannabis,” said company president Jeff Leger. “This announcement is a leap forward for those looking for professional oversight and trusted support in this area.”
There are nearly 1300 Shoppers Drug Mart locations across Canada (operating under Pharmaprix in Québec), as well as 47 medical clinic pharmacies under the name Shoppers Simply Pharmacy (Pharmaprix Simplement Santé in Québec).
