Recipe Unlimited, the franchisor for Canadian brands Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s, is set to discontinue the use of plastic bags in its network of restaurants by the end of the year.
The announcement is part of the franchise system’s continued effort to reduce waste and improve its environmental impact. In 2018, Recipe (formerly Cara Operations) was among the first companies to drop plastic straws from all of its restaurants.
The franchise system, which also operates East Side Mario’s, Kelseys, and Montana’s, is also eliminating Styrofoam containers by the end of the year.
“We have a full-court press on reducing waste wherever we can, as quickly as we can,” said Recipe CEO Frank Hennessey. “That means looking at every aspect of how we run our restaurants, including single-use items; energy, water, and gas consumption; and food waste. Today’s announcement is part of our ongoing commitment to make positive contributions to the environment and life in Canada.”
